Day 95 – Shawna
The Bahamian people on Green Turtle Cay are the nicest people you’ll ever meet. We made friends with some of the locals and they explain that when you have nothing, you share everything.
We were swimming and snorkeling at Bida Beach and the girls started playing with Shawna and some of her friends. After a few hours, we got hungry and told them we had to go eat. Shawna didn’t want us to leave and suggested we go visit her family and they would be happy to feed us. They were having a bbq not too far away.
It was very cute and I thought the gesture was really nice of her. She was persistent though. She thought we were crazy for leaving just because we were hungry. Can you imagine walking up to complete strangers and asking for lunch at the beach? As we were packing up to leave, she went running off and I thought that would be the last we saw of her.
A few minutes later, she showed up with plates of mahi-mahi and peas and rice for everyone. I couldn’t believe it and was actually embarrassed. Her family was as nice as she was and made us feel completely welcome. It might be the best meal I’ve ever had. I ended up going fishing with one of them the next day to catch my own mahi-mahi.
Great portrait! I really like the comp. as well as the color pop between the water and her dress or swimsuit (not sure which it is). The story ties it all together. It’s amazing how sometimes that level of friendliness almost feels foreign to us.
Beautiful picture! I loved the story that goes with it too. How fortunate you and your family are to experience such hospitality. You’ll have wonderful memories of this trip and fantastic photos to remember it by.
Gorgeous picture, and great story to go with it!!
